Kelley Mayer is a school consultant working on the Targeted Reading Initiative, a project of the National Research Center on Rural Education Support. She received her B.A. degree in Psychology and her Early Childhood Education certification at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She received her M.A. degree in Teaching from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She taught kindergarten for five years in Alexandria, Virginia before entering the Ph.D. program in Early Childhood, Families, and Literacy at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research interests include teacher-child relationships and emergent literacy. She is specifically interested in children’s writing development in preschool and kindergarten and how teachers support their students’ early attempts at writing.
